Top Team:
Mentor-
Again clearly the best team locally, but
only the best team because of Nick Ivancic. Take Nick out of the picture and
Harvey easily claims top honors. Still lacking the skills to compete at a major
level, mentor accomplished nothing in the post season. The Mentor Boys team captures the best team award for the
fourth straight year, but don't put your money on them doing it next year. Mentor
really lacks the depth that has helped them stay on top locally for so long.
MVP: Ben Robinson - Chardon - I never usually agree with the News-Herald, but this time I do. With Nick Ivancic going down with a season ending injury, it was hard to pick a MVP. But looking at the big picture Ben Robinson was the MVP for all of us in North East Ohio. Most people think the 800 is the hardest race on the track and running Division I makes it even harder. So when Ben came out of no where to capture the title, it touched all of our hearts.

Mentor-
Again clearly the best team locally, but
still lacking the skills to compete at a major level. Even though they fell on there faces at
the Regional meet, the Mentor Boys team captures the best team award for the
third straight year. Harvey also stays in the top three this year staying
in second place, while Mayfield comes out of no where to finish third.
MVP: Nick Ivancic- Mentor- Nick Ivancic can do it all, sprint, jump and run distance. He is a dominating performer for only being a Junior. He was on the leader board more than any other athlete in the area. The future is very bright for Nick.

Top Team:
Mentor - Mentor
took the title back from Hawken as this years top team. The News Herald picked
Hawken as the top team, but Mentor has way too much depth compared to Hawken's
super stars. Head to Head and with Turner hurt, Achilles gives the edge to
Mentor. Also Euclid looks to be a future force if they can keep their team
together.
MVP: Hallie Cope - Mentor- Everyone loves the best and Hallie was the best on the track in 2003. She's at the top of the leader board in almost every track event and she's only a Freshman. She can do it all, Hallie will be fun to watch in the future.

Oops: Brook Turner - Hawken After an Awesome 2002 season Turner came out in 2003 with high hopes, but in the end a pulled hamstring kept her out of the big meet. Turner is clearly the best all around women's athlete in the area, but even before the injury her times were not on top of the leader board. Brook is a fighter and should rebound next year.

Top Team:
Hawken-
Hawken and the Mentor girls went back and
forth all year, but in the end the Hawken girls were the better team.
MVP: Brook Turner- Hawken- Wow, I actually agree with the News Herald on this one. Turner was an easy pick becuase she was one of the best athletes on the track this year and it showed at the state meet. Turner won 4 events and is only a Sophmore. What else can she do?

Achilles Men Athletes of the Year
Track & Field 2002!!!!
Top Team:
Mentor-
Even though they fell on there faces at
the Regional meet, the Mentor Boys team captures the best team award for the
second straight year. They had one of the best District track performances
ever, pounding all local competition into the track! It would be nice to
see a team step up and challenge Mentor next year.
MVP: Ryan Brown- North- Ryan carried the work load for an average track team. He ran his heart out in every race, topping his senior year off with a 5th place finish at the state meet. But Brown as most of us called him will be remembered for his balls out District meet where he finished 1st in the 1600 ~ 4:21 & then embarrassing the whole 800 field by blowing everyone away with 100 meters left with his hands in the air. Good luck to Ryan Brown in college, I hope he really considers going to Mount.

Province-

Sprints: Terence

The Oops Award: Chardon - After dominating most of the Achilles standing all year the guys went into the District meet with high hopes, but in the end they looked like a fish out of water. This team has a bright future with a really good coach and a state of the art Track, But without going up against better competition and competing in bigger track meets earlier in the season this team will never make it out of Districts.

Rankings are best over all performances from the year. This ranking is not based on state performances or state finishes. I have seen many great athletes not make it to states and some pretty mediocre athletes make it to states. These are the top performances from the year. First place gets 10 points, second 9 and so on. They are added up at the end to determine who is on top. If you don't like were your team finished them perform better next year! Picking the MVP was hard but we had to go with the person that helped get their team on top of the Achilles rankings.
